Canadiens trounce Senators
THE Montreal Canadiens scored three third-period goals to run away with a 4-1 victory over the Ottawa Senators in a Northeast Division clash on Tuesday.
Jeff Halpern broke a 1-1 tie with a wrister at 2:18 in the third while Brian Gionta and Roman Hamrlik followed with goals to give the division-leading Canadiens (18-8-2) their third straight win.
Goaltender Carey Price made 27 saves on the night to earn his league-best 17th win, allowing a power-play goal to Nick Foligno with nine seconds left in the first period.
Michael Cammalleri had Montreal's other goal.
"Especially the last couple of games, it's been all the team," Price told reporters.
"I'm just in there filling space, really, because we've been playing so well. I've just been taking up oxygen out there, really."
The struggling Senators (12-15-2) lost for the ninth time in 12 games to fall 12 points behind Montreal.
Pascal Leclaire made 30 saves in net for Ottawa. He left the game with 4:22 to play with an apparent injury but returned with under two minutes remaining after Brian Elliott allowed Montreal's fourth goal. The stagnant Senators offense could do little to help Leclaire as they have scored one goal or less in four of the last five games.
"The biggest thing for us is we have to get the offense going," said Ottawa's Daniel Alfredsson.
