Canucks cool off the Flames
ROBERTO Luongo made 32 saves as the Vancouver Canucks snapped the Calgary Flames' four-game winning streak with a 3-1 victory on Sunday in Vancouver.
The Northwest-leading Canucks raced to a 3-0 lead on first-period goals from Daniel Sedin, Ryan Kesler and Henrik Sedin, who scored his 28th of the season.
That was more than enough support for Luongo, who was heading for a shutout until Robyn Regehr fired a slap shot past him at 11:50 in the third period to put the Flames on the board.
"Obviously we came out strong," Luongo said. "And then I don't know what happened, if we tried to protect the lead or what, but we struggled and they took the momentum and fortunately we were able to hold on."
Calgary (34-25-9), which outshot the home team 11-0 in the third period, remain one point behind the Detroit Red Wings for the eighth and final playoff place in the Western Conference.
Flames netminder Miikka Kiprusoff stopped 17 of 20 shots during the first but was replaced for the start of the second by Vesa Toskala.
For Vancouver (43-23-3), the Sedin brothers set each other up for goals with Daniel striking first with a wrist shot a minute into the game.
Capital comeback
Kesler followed six minutes later and Henrik then scored at 16:26 and also took over the franchise lead for assists by passing Trevor Linden with the 416th of his career.
"I don't know if it's the crowd, just being back home, or what it is, but we seem to create a lot of chances early and got the first goal two games in a row," Henrik said.
In other games, it was: Capitals 4, Blackhawks 3, OT; Penguins 2, Lightning 1; Rangers 3, Flyers 1; Coyotes 3, Thrashers 2, SO; Ducks 4, Sharks 2; Predators 3, Kings 2; Wild 4, Blues 2; Avalanche 5, Stars 3; and Islanders 4, Maple Leafs 1.
In Chicago, Nicklas Backstrom scored in overtime as the Washington Capitals completed a remarkable comeback without star Alex Ovechkin to beat the Chicago Blackhawks 4-3.
Backstrom skated up the side, went around Chicago's Brent Seabrook and beat Antti Niemi for his second goal of the game.
Ovechkin, the two-time MVP and the league's leading scorer this season, got a game misconduct in the first period for knocking Brian Campbell into the boards.
