Canucks pip Blues, Islanders edge Avs
Vancouver’s Mike Santorelli scored the tiebreaking goal in the third period to give the Canucks an overdue 2-1 win over St Louis on Friday, preventing the Blues from going clear atop the NHL Central Division.
Also Friday, the New York Islanders beat Colorado in overtime, and Washington edged Toronto.
Vancouver goaltender Eddie Lack made 29 saves and Zac Dalpe also scored as the Canucks snapped a five-game losing skid.
Alex Pietrangelo scored for St Louis, which had won seven straight, and had taken at least a point from its past nine road games.
New York’s Michael Grabner knocked in a shot from the slot at 1:46 of overtime to give the Islanders a 2-1 victory over Colorado.
It was the sixth road win in a row for the Islanders.
“We’ve been a decent road team,” Islanders coach Jack Capuano said. “Simple hockey maybe, and doing the right things. Goaltending has been pretty good for us. Our special teams on the road over the last two weeks has been good.”
Nathan MacKinnon, who leads NHL rookies in points, scored the sole goal for the Avalanche.
Washington’s Joel Ward scored the go-ahead goal in the third period to lift the Capitals to a 3-2 victory over Toronto.
Alex Ovechkin added a goal and an assist and Nicklas Backstrom also scored for the Capitals.
James Van Riemsdyk and Phil Kessel each had a goal and an assist for the Maple Leafs, who have given up 21 goals in losing four straight games since the Winter Classic victory.
The New York Rangers downeyyd Dallas 3-2.
Columbus goalie Sergei Bobrovsky made 36 saves in a shutout to guide the Blue Jackets past Carolina 3-0.
Edmonton’s Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored two goals, including the winner in overtime, and added an assist to lead the Oilers to a come-from-behind win against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Pittsburgh’s Sidney Crosby, who leads the league with 67 points, had one goal and one assist.
