Chicago makes the most of Dallas loss

THE defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks lost their final game of the NHL regular season on Sunday but squeaked into the playoffs by virtue of a Dallas Stars loss.

The Blackhawks fell 3-4 to the Detroit Red Wings, failing to get the point needed to secure the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference, but earned the berth when the ninth-placed Dallas Stars lost 3-5 to the Minnesota Wild.

Had Dallas beaten Minnesota, Chicago would have become just the fifth NHL team to miss the playoffs a year after wining the Stanley Cup. Instead, Chicago will face the top-seed Vancouver Canucks in the first round of the playoffs starting on Wednesday.

"I sat there and watched (the Stars' game) from start to finish, it was pretty exciting," Blackhawks winger Patrick Sharp told reporters. "We weren't in the best of moods after today's game against the Wings but we're happy we're going to the playoffs. We feel like we're well prepared."

Dallas, which was trying to reach the playoffs for the first time since the 2007-08 season, won four straight heading into Sunday's action to keep its hopes alive.

"It was in our control, and we didn't win," said Dallas center Brad Richards. "We put too much pressure on ourselves to be perfect at the end, with no room for error."

Game-winning

In St. Paul, Antti Miettinen scored the game-winning goal in the third period for the Minnesota Wild.

Minnesota scored first on a rare goal by enforcer Brad Staubitz and last on an empty-netter by Pierre-Marc Bouchard after the Stars pulled goalie Kari Lehtonen with 1:21 left.

In Newark, New Jersey, Vladimir Zharkov and Alexander Urbom scored third-period goals as New Jersey topped playoff-bound Boston 3-2 in Jacques Lemaire's final game as Devils coach.

The 66-year-old Lemaire said after the game that he won't return for another season in New Jersey.

The Hall of Famer, who retired after last season, returned on December 23 after rookie coach John MacLean was fired and helped the Devils make a valiant run at a playoff berth.

Elsewhere in NHL, it was: Penguins 5, Thrashers 2; and Avalanche 4, Oilers 3.
