Coyotes force Game 7 but Canucks advance

THE Phoenix Coyotes stormed to a 5-2 road victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday, using a solid team performance to force a deciding Game 7 in their Western Conference first-round playoff series.

Five different players scored for the Coyotes and Ilya Bryzgalov made 31 saves to send the best-of-seven series back to Arizona for tomorrow's decider, where the home team can advance to the second round for a first time since moving to Phoenix.

"Anytime you can compete in a Game 7, that's like the pinnacle right there," Phoenix coach Dave Tippett told reporters in Detroit.

Facing elimination with a defeat, Lauri Korpikoski opened the scoring for the visitors at 4:10 in the first period and Mathieu Schneider gave the Coyotes an early 2-0 lead in the second.

Brad Stuart pulled one back for the Red Wings almost immediately before Radim Vrbata and Wojtek Wolski secured a winning margin for Phoenix with a goal apiece in the second half of the period.

Taylor Pyatt's tip-in at 5:25 in the third extended the advantage to 5-1 before Darren Helm added a final goal for Detroit with 3:31 remaining.

The two-time defending Western Conference champions Red Wings had won the previous two games by a combined score of 7-1 to take control of the series but could lose in the opening round for the first time since the 2005-06 season.

In Los Angeles, the Vancouver Canucks scored three unanswered goals in the third period to eliminate the Los Angeles Kings from the playoffs with a 4-2 victory.

Trailing 1-2 through two periods, Kevin Bieksa tied the contest at 1:57 in the third, Daniel Sedin converted the go-ahead goal with 2:03 to go and Alexandre Burrows added the topper as the Canucks took the best-of-seven series 4-2.

Roberto Luongo made 30 saves to lead Vancouver into the second round, where it will face either Chicago or Nashville.

The sixth-seeded Kings took an early advantage when Alexander Frolov opened the scoring at 10:08 in the first and after Steve Bernier tied the game on a powerplay, Drew Doughty put the home side back on top with a slap shot at 15:57 in the second.

The advantage was short-lived, however, and once Vancouver had tied the contest early in the third, the visitors used that momentum to carry them into the next round.
