Coyotes maintain hot streak
THE Phoenix Coyotes maintained their hot streak on home ice after a 3-2 shootout win over the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday earned them a 10th successive home triumph.
Lauri Korpikoski scored the only goal in the shootout to beat the Canucks and improve the Coyotes' home record to 16-5-0 on the year.
"I'm just proud of how hard the guys competed," Coyotes coach Dave Tippett told reporters.
"I mean you've got Vancouver on a winning streak, sitting here last night watching our game on TV.
"We played a hard, hard game in San Jose and we come back here and the guys muster up that kind of effort, it makes our whole coaching staff very proud."
Jason LaBarbera made 28 saves in place of regular Phoenix (25-13-3) goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov, including four saves in overtime.
It was a satisfying performance for LaBarbera, who was playing against his former team having backed up Roberto Luongo for a time last season.
"It's always weird when you play your ex-team mates, especially when it's so close," said LaBarbera.
"I ended the year with them and we had a lot of good memories in the playoffs, and I just wanted to come with a good effort tonight."
Ed Jovanovski put Phoenix ahead midway through the second period before Mikael Samuelsson tied it up less than a minute later.
Petr Prucha made it 2-1 for the Coyotes at 17:02.
Vancouver (23-16-1) forced overtime when Kyle Wellwood scored with 6:12 remaining in the third period.
Wellwood, Samuelsson and Mason Raymond all failed to score for the Canucks in the shootout.
The win moved Phoenix within two points of Pacific Division leaders San Jose, who beat the Coyotes in a shootout a night earlier.
Sabres rally
In Buffalo, New York, Jason Pominville scored with 9:05 left to complete the Sabres' rally from a three-goal deficit to beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-3.
Drew Stafford scored twice, first on a penalty shot, and added an assist on Paul Gaustad's goal.
Patrick Lalime stopped all 27 shots he faced in relief of starter Ryan Miller, who was pulled after allowing three goals on 11 shots through 22 minutes.
Jordan Staal, Bill Guerin and Chris Kunitz scored for the Penguins, who squandered a three-goal lead for the first time since a 3-5 loss at Nashville last January.
In Anaheim, California, Bobby Ryan scored two goals and set up another for rookie Dan Sexton to lead the Ducks 4-2 over the Minnesota Wild.
In Uniondale, New York, Rob Schremp scored the only goal in the shootout and Dwayne Roloson made 41 saves as the Islanders beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 2-1.
In other NHL action, it was: Predators 4, Blues 3; and Stars 5, Blackhawks 4.
