Crosby's 25-game points streak ends with defeat
SIDNEY Crosby's 25-game points streak, the longest in the NHL for 18 years, ended on Wednesday when the Pittsburgh Penguins lost 1-2 in a shootout to the New York Islanders.
Crosby managed just two shots against the Islanders to go scoreless for the first time since November 3.
"Would have been nice to keep it going, just one of those games (where) there was low scoring," Crosby told reporters. "There was chances to be had but they didn't go in."
The NHL's leader in points and goals scored, Crosby tallied 26 goals and 24 assists during the run which is the longest since Quebec's Mats Sundin had a 30-game streak during the 1992-93 season.
In Phoenix, Shane Doan scored twice as the Phoenix Coyotes put on an offensive showcase to crush Los Angeles 6-3, snapping the Kings' four-game winning streak.
Doan opened the scoring in an action-packed first period, where the Coyotes took a 4-3 lead. Doan also converted a slap shot at 6:11 in the second period and teammate Kyle Turris scored four minutes later to put the game out of reach.
The third period was surprisingly scoreless, although Phoenix's six goals were a season-high.
"I don't think we scored six goals in the last three weeks," Doan told reporters. "It's nice to get some goals, especially against LA, when they kept coming back and we were able to respond."
Kings (22-13-1) goaltender Jonathan Quick, who was coming off a shutout against San Jose on Monday, was pulled after allowing all six goals on 18 shots.
Back-up Jonathan Bernier came on and stopped all 13 shots he faced.
