Defending champs grab series lead on Capitals
Boston's Chris Kelly scored on a long slap shot early in overtime to give the defending Stanley Cup champion Bruins a 1-0 win over the Washington Capitals on Thursday in the opener of their first-round NHL playoff series in Boston.
The game was physical and scoreless until goalie Tim Thomas, who stopped 17 shots for the shutout, turned back a Washington attack early in the extra period. Brian Rolston dropped it for Benoit Pouliot to clear the zone and he pushed it up to Kelly, who slapped a hard shot over Braden Holtby's glove for the game-winner.
Holtby, a third-stringer making his playoff debut because Tomas Vokoun and Michal Neuvirth were injured, kept Washington in the game while the Bruins peppered him with shots.
In other games, it was: Rangers 4, Senators 2; Coyotes 3, Blackhawks 2 (OT); and Sharks 3, Blues 2 (double OT).
In New York, Marian Gaborik and Brian Boyle scored minutes apart in the second period to break open a tight game, and top-seeded New York opened its first-round Eastern Conference series with a 4-2 win over Ottawa.
The Rangers went ahead through a goal by Ryan Callahan in the first period, Gaborik and Boyle pushed the lead to 3-0, and Brad Richards added a goal in the third for the Rangers.
In Glendale, Arizona, Martin Hanzal scored 9:29 into overtime as Phoenix opened its playoff series against Chicago with a win.
In St Louis, Martin Havlat scored his second goal of the game 3:34 into the second overtime, giving San Jose a win over St Louis in Game 1 of their series.
Andrew Desjardins tied it for San Jose with 5:16 to go in regulation.
Patrik Berglund scored his first two career playoff goals for the Blues.
