Denmark stuns US to advance at worlds
DENMARK became the first team to reach the world championship second round after sinking favorite United States 2-1 with an overtime goal in Cologne on Monday.
Denmark, which also caused an upset in its first Group D game by beating Finland 4-1, grabbed the winner through defenseman Stefan Lassen 2:04 into overtime.
It was the second consecutive defeat for the Americans who lost 1-2 in overtime to the Germans.
Lassen flicked a wrist shot, hitting netminder Scott Clemmensen, before scoring on the rebound to seal qualification.
"This is the best Danish team ever," National Hockey League player Peter Regin told reporters.
The US, which has only one player in its squad from the silver medal-winning Vancouver Olympics team because of the ongoing NHL playoffs, must win its final match against the Finns to avoid going into the relegation round in the 16-team tournament.
"Inexcusable, the US should not be losing these games," said captain Jack Johnson. "At the same time it's hard to win when you score just two goals in two games."
Finland veteran Petteri Nummelin was honored for playing in a record 15th world championship as his team edged past Germany 1-0 to leave the section wide open. The hosts must beat Denmark in their final group match to advance or hope for a Finnish victory over the US.
Olympic champion Canada crushed Latvia 6-1 to advance after two wins out of two in Group B.
