Devils win but no record for Brodeur
MARTIN Brodeur will have to wait a little longer for his latest goaltending achievement after giving up two goals in the New Jersey Devils' 4-2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes on Wednesday.
Brodeur, who already holds the record for most wins by a National Hockey League goalie, tied Terry Sawchuck's record of 103 career shutouts on Monday and looked set to post a new mark with the Devils up 3-0 in the second period against the Hurricanes.
However, Carolina's Brandon Sutter and Tuomo Ruutu spoiled the shutout bid with goals two minutes apart to make it 3-2.
"I wasn't really thinking about (the shutout) there," Brodeur told reporters. "It's going to happen when it happens. If the goal happened with four minutes left, maybe that would have been tough."
Andy Greene scored twice and Patrik Elias and Rob Niedermayer also scored for the Atlantic division-leading Devils (21-7-1), who won their fourth in a row.
Brodeur, who missed much of last season due to a biceps injury, improved to 19-7-1 for the season. He currently leads the league in wins this season (19) and is three contests away from tying the record for games played as goaltender set by Patrick Roy with 1,029.
Elsewhere in the NHL, it was: Sabres 3, Capitals 0; Blue Jackets 3, Panthers 0; Maple Leafs 3, Islanders 2; Blues 1, Red Wings 0; Oilers 3, Lightning 2; Blackhawks 2, Rangers 1 (in overtime); Wild 1, Avalanche 0; Flames 3, Thrashers 1; and Kings 5, Sharks 4 (in OT).
In Newark, New Jersey, Carolina goaltender Cam Ward made 27 saves in his first action since missing 13 games after being cut by a skate. The Canes are a league-worst 7-18-5.
"In the first period, I was a little bit shaky and a little bit uncomfortable, but I thought I settled down as the game went on," Ward said.
"I thought I played better in the second and third period, and towards the end of the game I started feeling like myself."
The Hurricanes defeated New Jersey in last season's playoffs before making the Eastern Conference finals, but have not recaptured top form.
Elias opened the scoring in the first with his 299th career goal, before Greene made it 2-0 with two minutes left in the period. Greene scored again on a wrist shot at 6:05 in the second and Niedermayer completed the scoring in the third.
