Ducks' Selanne notches 600th goal
FINLAND'S Teemu Selanne became the 18th player in National Hockey League history to score 600 goals, reaching the milestone on Sunday in the Anaheim Ducks' 5-2 victory over the Colorado Avalanche.
The only other European-born players in the 600-goal club are his compatriot Jari Kurri (601) and the Czech Republic's Jaromir Jagr (646).
The 39-year-old Selanne is the fourth player to reach the milestone in the last four seasons, along with Jagr, Brendan Shanahan, and Joe Sakic.
Selanne connected 34 seconds into the second period on his fifth shot of the game, scoring into a wide-open net during a powerplay with goalie Craig Anderson out of position.
"I guess that was the easiest I've had in a while," Selanne said. "I've had a lot of chances the last three games, but nothing went in. Then you get one of those. It's amazing the way my teammates have been feeding me the puck. I think they wanted this more than I did. Obviously, it's a great feeling, and I don't have to think about it anymore."
Anderson became the 133rd goalie that Selanne has scored against in the regular season. Selanne's first NHL goal came against San Jose's Jeff Hackett on October 8, 1992.
Selanne assisted on a powerplay goal win by Ryan Getzlaf, the 648th assist of Selanne's career.
He holds the Ducks' record with 373 goals, most of them with Paul Kariya as his linemate. His latest milestone came just three days after Kariya got his 400th goal.
Same chemistry
"Numbers-wise, I had my best years here with Paul and we helped each other so much. Not very often can you find the same chemistry that we had," Selanne said. "It was amazing, and they were great memories."
On Sunday in Anaheim, Selanne, playing his 16th and perhaps his final season in the NHL, scored while John-Michael Liles was off for hooking Matt Beleskey.
Avalanche goalie Anderson stopped Lubomir Visnovsky's one-timer from just inside the blue line, then thwarted Corey Perry's rebound attempt. But the Avalanche defense couldn't clear the puck, and Selanne slammed his 21st goal of the season into a wide-open net before Anderson could scramble back to the crease.
Beleskey, Jason Blake, Troy Bodie and Ryan Getzlaf also scored, and Jonas Hiller made 26 saves. Darcy Tucker and Ruslan Salei scored for Colorado.
Elsewhere, it was: Coyotes 3, Stars 2 (in a shootout); Bruins 2, Rangers 1; Wild 4, Flames 3; Sabres 5, Hurricanes 3; Panthers 5, Lightning 2; Predators 3, Blues 2; Thrashers 3, Flyers 1; and Oilers 5, Sharks 1.
In Dallas, Adrian Aucoin scored in the fourth round of the shootout as Phoenix matched the franchise record with its ninth straight victory.
The Winnipeg Jets, who moved to Phoenix in 1996, also won nine in a row from March 8-27, 1985. Closing in on their first playoff berth since 2002, the Coyotes have 97 points to match Chicago for the most in the Western Conference.
Radim Verbata beat Marty Turco on the backhand in the third round, and Aucoin was successful for the fifth time in five shootout attempts this season.
