Ducks beat Rangers to end road trip

Anaheim’s Frederik Andersen made 32 saves to help the road-weary Ducks to a 2-1 victory over the New York Rangers on Monday at Madison Square Garden.

In the day’s other game, Winnipeg ended a three-game losing streak with a 4-2 win over Detroit.

Anaheim got first-period goals from Corey Perry and Kyle Palmieri and hung on to finish an eight-game road trip on a high, having secured 11 points from its last six matches.

In four NHL games, all this season, goaltender Andersen is 4-0. He has allowed a total of five goals, and only Rangers defenseman Michael Del Zotto got a puck past him in this one.

The Rangers received their third power play with 3:26 remaining, but that advantage was cut short when with New York’s first penalty of the game. Another came moments later for too many men on the ice.

In Winnipeg, the Jets finally lived up to their name, roaring out of the gate at full speed as they outskated and outshot the Red Wings.

Despite the strong start, Detroit (9-5-2) was leading 2-1 in the second period on goals by Henrik Zetterberg and Danny DeKeyser. It was DeKeyser’s first career NHL goal and came shorthanded on a slapshot from the blue-line that beat Jets’ goalie Al Montoya.

“I think a big thing is we didn’t get down on ourselves,” said Jets forward Mark Scheifele. “We knew we made some mistakes but I think on the bench we were saying, ‘Guys, we’re still in this, we’ve still got lots of game’.”

The Jets continued skating and forcing the play, outshooting the Red Wings 47-27 on the night.

Matt Halishuck scored the winner. Michael Frolik and Andrew Ladd also scored for the Jets.
