Early flurry of goals allows Sharks to take the bite out of the Blues

San Jose took a 3-0 lead after just 22 minutes to set up a 4-2 road win over St Louis on Tuesday, moving the Sharks level with the Blues on points as the fight for Western Conference playoff positions heats up.

Among other key results, Anaheim also started powerfully to beat Detroit and extend its winning streak, Minnesota defeated Vancouver in a shootout to stop the Canucks’ run of victories, and Chicago’s good form continued with a win at Nashville.

San Jose’s Joe Pavelski scored the first of the Sharks’ three quick early goals, with Matt Irwin, Brent Burns and Marty Havlat also finding the net.

Antti Niemi stopped 20 shots for the Sharks, who have won all three games this season against the Blues.

Kevin Shattenkirk and Jay Bouwmeester scored second-period goals for St Louis.

Anaheim scored four times in the first period to set up a 5-2 win over Detroit, pushing the Ducks’ winning run to six games.

Sami Vatanen had a goal and an assist while Nick Bonino, Jakob Silfverberg, Corey Perry and Saku Koivu also scored for the Ducks.

Tomas Jurco got his first career goal and Daniel Cleary scored for the Red Wings, who have lost their past six.

Minnesota’s Jason Pominville slipped a shot past Roberto Luongo’s glove in the third round of a shootout to give the Wild a 3-2 win over Vancouver, ending the Canucks’ winning streak at seven games.

It was a tough defeat for Luongo, who made 30 saves, including 14 in the third period and overtime, and the first shot of the shootout.

Zach Parise had an early goal for the Wild, and Charlie Coyle scored late on a snap shot that went between Luongo’s legs to tie the game in the third period.

Jannik Hansen and David Booth each scored for the  Canucks. Both players have now scored in two straight games.

Chicago’s Duncan Keith scored a goal and added an assist to lead the Blackhawks to a 3-1 win over Nashville.

Patrick Kane and Nick Leddy also scored for the Stanley Cup champions, who have won five of six.

Shea Weber scored for the Predators.

In other games, it was: Canadiens 3, Coyotes 1; Stars 3, Avalanche 2; Bruins 2, Flames 0; Kings 3, Oilers 0; Flyers 5, Capitals 2; Panthers 3, Leafs 1; Lightning 3, Islanders 2 (SO); and Sabres 4, Jets 2.

Montreal’s Max Pacioretty scored twice in the third period to lead the Canadiens over Phoenix. Andrei Markov also scored in the third period for the Canadiens.

Mikkel Boedker scored for the Coyotes, who have not won at Montreal since 1996.

Also, Dallas’ Colton Sceviour scored the tiebreaking goal in the third period to give the Stars a win over Colorado.
