Flames burn Stars with late goal

ALEX Tanguay tied the game late in the third period then scored the shootout winner to lead the visiting Calgary Flames to a 3-2 win over the Dallas Stars on Thursday.

With goalie Miikka Kiprusoff on the bench in favor of an extra attacker, Tanguay's wrist shot tied the score at 2-2 with just 1:21 left in regulation.

The Flames dominated the final two periods, outshooting the Stars 25-9, but needed Tanguay's late show to overcome a third-period goal by Stars captain Brenden Morrow. The teams exchanged first-period powerplay goals from Anton Babchuk (Flames) and Mike Ribeiro (Stars) before a score-less second.

Stars goalie Kari Lehtonen was in brilliant form over the final two periods, while Kiprusoff stood tall in the shootout, stopping all three shooters he faced.
