Flames turn up the heat for OT win
CALGARY'S Rene Bourque made a key contribution on his return to action after missing two games with a concussion, scoring the overtime goal that gave the Flames a 1-0 victory over the Nashville Predators on Tuesday.
Bourque scored shortly after two minutes into the extra period when he sent a rebound past Predators goalie Pekka Rinne, who had stopped 34 shots up to that point in his first game since missing three with a lower back injury.
"It was kind of a broken play," Bourque said. "I think (Brendan Morrison) just tried to get it on net. It bounced in the air, hit my shoulder. It got to my stick and that is when I shot it in the net."
Calgary's Miikka Kiprusoff stopped 34 Nashville shots, including 12 in each of the first two periods, to collect his first shutout of the season and 35th of his career.
The win was the second straight for the Flames (3-2-0), who have won five successive games in Nashville.
"In this building, they go hard from the start," Kiprusoff said. "They shoot a lot and we knew that and we were ready for that."
In other games on Tuesday, it was: Bruins 3, Capitals 1; Wild 6, Canucks 2; and Hurricanes 5, Sharks 2.
The Predators (3-0-2) lost their second straight game in overtime after winning their first three of the season.
Defenseman Francis Bouillon led the home team with five shots but Nashville was unable to get a shot on goal in the extra session.
In Washington, David Krejci and Milan Lucic each had a goal and an assist in the first period as the Boston Bruins ended the Washington Capitals' four-game winning streak with a 3-1 victory.
Matt Hunwick added a goal, and Tim Thomas made 35 saves to improve to 3-0 for the Bruins, who held Alex Ovechkin without a point for the first time in the young season.
In St Paul, Marek Zidlicky had a goal and two assists as Minnesota scored three times on the power play to defeat Vancouver.
Guillaume Latendresse, Cal Clutterbuck, John Madden, Andrew Brunette and Matt Cullen also scored for the Wild, who entered the game with the league's best power play at 38.1 percent, and was 3 for 3 with the man advantage.
Daniel Sedin scored twice for Vancouver, which could see center Rick Rypien facing disciplinary action after pushing a fan.
At San Jose, Eric Staal scored a short-handed goal and Cam Ward made 41 saves to help Carolina beat San Jose. Erik Cole, Patrick Dwyer, Chad LaRose and Joni Pitkanen also scored for the Hurricanes, who ended a two-game slide and won for the first time since sweeping the Minnesota Wild in Helsinki, Finland.
Patrick Marleau scored twice for the Sharks, who have yet to win a home game. Antti Niemi made 26 stops, but has allowed nine goals over his past two games.
