Fleury helps Penguins shut down the Islanders

CRAIG Adams scored in the third period and Marc-Andre Fleury made 29 saves to guide an injury-riddled Pittsburgh Penguins to a 1-0 victory over the New York Islanders on Tuesday in Pittsburgh.

With Sidney Crosby missing a ninth straight game with concussion symptoms and Evgeni Malkin also out with illness and a knee injury, Fleury's 18th career shutout kept the Penguins five points behind front-running Philadelphia in the Atlantic Division.

Adams' wrist shot at 8:35 of the final period beat New York netminder Kevin Poulin, who stopped 30 shots, as the Penguins (31-15-4) won for the fifth time in their last six games heading into this weekend's All-Star Game.

"(Dustin Jeffrey) won the face-off and got a shot on net, (Arron Asham) got the rebound and I got the second one," Adams said.

"It was on my stick and then I just whacked at it, I think it went between (Poulin's) legs."

Pittsburgh once again thrived on defense and has allowed just nine goals over the past six games.

"We did make some mistakes and (Fleury) was there every time, real strong," said head coach Dan Bylsma. "He deserves a shutout going into the All-Star Game."

In other games, it was: Ducks 3, Blue Jackets 2; Panthers 4, Rangers 3; Flyers 5, Canadiens 2; Sabres 3, Senators 2 (OT); Lightning 2, Maple Leafs 0; Wild 4, Blackhawks 2; and Oilers 4, Coyotes 3.

In Philadelphia, Jeff Carter, Claude Giroux and Kimmo Timonen scored power-play goals and the Philadelphia Flyers head into the All-Star break as the best team in the league after a 5-2 victory over the Montreal Canadiens.

The Flyers' 10-2-0 record in January has catapulted them to an NHL-best 33 victories.

Dan Carcillo and Danny Briere also scored for the Flyers.

The Flyers scored three goals on their first 11 shots and easily handled Montreal. Sergei Bobrovsky was sensational in net with 29 saves.

Carter and Timonen scored 63 seconds apart on 5-on-3 opportunities in the first period against Carey Price and the Flyers cruised the rest of the way.
