Flyers' Pronger out for rest of season
PHILADELPHIA Flyers captain Chris Pronger will miss the rest of the NHL season because of severe post-concussion syndrome.
The Canadian veteran sat out six games earlier this season after taking a brutal hit to the face with a stick during a game against Toronto on October 24. He was sidelined again after undergoing knee surgery last month.
The 37-year-old defenseman visited concussion specialists in Pittsburgh on Wednesday after complaining of a fairly persistent headache and sluggish feeling.
Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said during Philadelphia's game against Montreal on Thursday that Pronger was suffering from severe post-concussion syndrome and the doctors advised he sit out the remainder of the season.
Pronger led the Anaheim Ducks to the 2007 Stanley Cup title and won Olympic gold medals with Canada in 2002 and 2010. He had one goal and 11 assists in 13 games this season.
Flyers star forward Claude Giroux, the NHL scoring leader with 39 points, is also out indefinitely with a concussion after inadvertently taking a knee to the head from teammate Wayne Simmonds in a game on Saturday. Giroux's injury was revealed a day after Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby said he was dealing with a recurrence of concussion-like symptoms and is out indefinitely.
Headache
Crosby, who missed more than 10 months after taking shots to the head in successive games in January, hasn't played since developing a headache following a 3-1 loss to Boston last week.
Meanwhile, Andrei Meszaros scored 8:08 into the third and Mathieu Carle had three assists as the Philadelphia Flyers extended their winning streak to seven games with a 4-3 victory over the Montreal Canadiens.
Maxime Talbot, Harry Zolnierczyk and Wayne Simmonds also scored for the Flyers, who have won nine of 10.
In Columbus, Ohio, Dustin Brown scored on a redirect midway through the third period to lead Los Angeles 2-1 past Columbus to give interim coach John Stevens his first victory.
In Raleigh, North Carolina, Drayson Bowman scored two goals as Carolina rallied to beat Vancouver 4-3 to give Kirk Muller his first coaching win on home ice.
