Flyers down Maple Leafs as Pronger takes a hit on face
Philadelphia defenseman Chris Pronger left the game after taking a vicious stick to the face, leaving the Flyers concerned over the health of their captain after a 4-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs in the NHL on Monday.
Pronger and Toronto's Mikhail Grabovski sprinted for a loose puck in the circle after a rebound. Grabovski slapped at the puck, but his stick connected with Pronger's and the blade shot straight up into the defenseman's face.
Pronger screamed in agony and instantly clutched his face. Hunched over, he skated straight to the bench, his hands over his eyes, and went to the dressing room with 8:02 left in the first period.
Jaromir Jagr and Scott Hartnell each scored their first two goals of the season for the Flyers.
In Montreal, Jacob Markstrom made 40 saves to preserve Florida's 2-1 win over slumping Montreal. Scottie Upshall scored 5:02 into the third period to help the Panthers extend Montreal's losing streak to six.
Markstrom made his second career start and recorded his second straight win.
Tomas Fleischmann scored a power-play goal in the first for Florida, and Scottie Upshall netted in the third.
Montreal lost a sixth straight and fell to 1-5-2, continuing its worst start in 70 years. It is the deepest the Canadiens have gone into a season with only one win since 1941-42.
In Winnipeg, Ryan Callahan scored a power-play goal to help New York edge Winnipeg 2-1.
Callahan scored his team's second power-play goal of the night at 8:41 of the third period.
Ruslan Fedotenko also scored with the man advantage early in the second period for the Rangers, and Dan Girardi assisted on both goals.
Nik Antropov scored for the Jets late in the second period.
