Flyers pull trigger on two major trades

THE Philadelphia Flyers stunned the hockey world by trading two star players to make salary cap room to sign goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov to a nine-year contract on Thursday.

Mike Richards and Jeff Carter, two key cogs in the Flyers' run to the Stanley Cup finals a year ago, were both traded in a pair of separate trades that shook up the franchise on the eve of the NHL draft.

Later Thursday, Philadelphia announced they signed 31-year-old Bryzgalov to a contract reported by TSN to be worth US$51 million over nine years. The Flyers had acquired the rights to Bryzgalov earlier this month in a deal with the Phoenix Coyotes.

The Flyers moved over US$100 million in salary in Thursday's deals that sent Richards to the Los Angeles Kings and Carter to the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Richards was traded for forwards Brayden Schenn and Wayne Simmonds and a second-round pick.

The Flyers acquired forward Jake Voracek and the club's first- and third-round picks from the Columbus Blue Jackets for Carter.

"Those are two hard phone calls to make," said general manager Paul Holmgren. "I think the world of both (Richards and Carter). That's difficult. That's the hard part of the job."

Richards, 26, spent the past three seasons as team captain. He scored 133 goals and had 349 points in 453 games with the Flyers since 2005.

"We felt, at this stage of the franchise, it was time to make a significant move for an impact player," Kings president and general manager Dean Lombardi said. "Mike Richards is not only one of the top players in the league, he's also universally recognized as one of the finer leaders in the game and one of its elite competitors."

Richards had 66 points this season.

Richards said he was shocked when he learned of the trade, adding he wanted to stay a Flyer the rest of his career.

Carter, 26, instantly becomes the best center to ever play for Columbus. He has 181 goals in his six full seasons in the NHL, all with the Flyers. He scored 36 this season.
