Flyers top Rangers as Boucher stands tall

THE bravery of Philadelphia Flyers goalie Brian Boucher and a disciplined team performance helped the Eastern Conference leaders to a 4-2 win over the New York Rangers on Sunday.

Goals from Claude Giroux and Daniel Carcillo in the second period helped the Flyers take a 3-1 lead into the final frame after weathering some early pressure from the Rangers, spurred on by support from the Madison Square Garden crowd in New York.

Boucher, who made 39 saves and 15 in the final frame, was injured during a scramble early in the third period when he was struck by teammate Kimmo Timonen in a collision.

He remained down on his stomach before getting back on his feet but appeared groggy for the remainder of the game as he regularly removed his helmet and sipped from his drink bottle.

"I couldn't feel my hand. The numbness is gone, but it still feels kind of weak," said Boucher. "I didn't feel as good as I did before, but you want to stay in there. I felt good enough to go. I felt like it was my game."

Playoff seeds

The win stretches the Flyers' Eastern Conference lead to eight points over Tampa Bay, while the Rangers will be looking nervously over their shoulder with a number of teams hot on their tail seeking one of the final playoff seeds.

Elsewhere in the National Hockey League, it was: Flames 4, Canadiens 0; Blackhawks 3, Penguins 2 (in a shootout); Red Wings 2, Wild 1 (in SO); and Capitals 2, Sabres 1.

In New York, the Flyers faced a barrage of Rangers pressure from the outset, Wojtek Wolski striking first for the Rangers but Jeff Carter leveled the scoring by the end of the first period.

After the Flyers dominated the second period the Rangers hit back when Derek Stepan capitalized with a shot that snuck through Boucher's legs.

But despite wave after wave of pressure, it was the Flyers who had the last laugh, Kris Versteeg scoring into an empty net in the final minute.

"It's frustrating but the belief in the team gets stronger for me," said a smiling Rangers coach John Tortorella, who added Slovakian forward Marian Gaborik was taken off after the first period for concussion.
