Forsberg retires after two-game return
FORWARD Peter Forsberg of the Colorado Avalanche announced his retirement on Monday, two games after returning to the National Hockey League following a three-year hiatus.
Forsberg, 37, said a chronic foot injury he first suffered in 2003 was at the heart of his decision to hang up the skates.
"I feel a little like a little kid who had their candy stolen," the Swede told a news conference in Denver, Colorado. "It feels a little sad to retire without going out in my own way, on my own terms but I will get over it. Something I have to live with."
Forsberg played in Colorado's 1-3 loss to Columbus on Friday, and then in the Avalanche's 3-5 setback to Nashville the following day, failing to score in either game.
He had a minus-four rating in the two games with three shots.
Forsberg said he was "really disappointed I couldn't play."
"I really wanted to come back and play the last 30 games here and hopefully help the team into the playoffs," he said. "I had to make a decision for the team so that they could move on and start winning games."
Forsberg, who played for Modo in the Swedish Elite League last season, is a former NHL MVP who won two Stanley Cups with Colorado and Olympic gold medals in 1994 and 2006. He had 249 goals and 885 points during a 12-season NHL career with Quebec, Colorado, Philadelphia and Nashville.
Colorado has dropped seven successive games, the franchise's longest losing streak since moving to Denver for the 1995-96 season.
Forsberg said he would not return to Sweden to resume his career.
