Gerber sharp as Oilers dump Sens

GOALTENDER Martin Gerber won for the second time in as many starts in his return to the NHL this season, helping the Edmonton Oilers beat his former team Ottawa 4-1 on Monday.
Gerber, who played in Russia last season before getting another shot in the NHL with Edmonton, made 22 saves to help the Oilers (7-12-4) win for the second time in three games.
The former Senators goalie, who got his first start of the season last week after an injury to Nikolai Khabibulin, allowed a Nick Foligno goal in the first period but was perfect the rest of the way.
"It's definitely nice to have this one," Gerber told reporters.
"It's always emotional to play somewhere you've been around for a while and it was really great to see the guys out there compete."
The Oilers supported Gerber with goals from Tom Gilbert, Andrew Cogliano, Gilbert Brule and Taylor Hall, who iced the win with an empty-net goal with less than two minutes to play.
Struggling
Brian Elliott made 21 stops for the struggling Senators (11-13-1), who have lost six of their last eight.
Ottawa has struggled offensively of late and has scored more than two goals just twice in their last 10 games.
After a promising start that saw Foligno end a 25-game scoring drought dating back to last season, the Senators could not break through against the Oilers, who are currently last in the Western Conference.
"We came out pretty strong and scored the first goal, but it kind of looked like we got into a lull there, then we took a bunch of penalties in the second period and we got tired out killing all of those," Elliott said.
In New York, Sidney Crosby extended his point streak to 13 games and the Pittsburgh Penguins won their seventh straight by beating the New York Rangers 3-1.
The Penguins, 9-0-1 in their past 10, haven't lost since falling to the Rangers at home in overtime on November 15. Their previous loss in regulation was on November 11 against Boston.
It is the Penguins' longest winning streak since another seven-game run in October 2009.
In NHL action elsewhere, it was: Stars 4, Hurricanes 1; Flames 3, Wild 0; and Ducks 2, Kings 0.
