Getzlaf scores the winner for Ducks
RYAN Getzlaf scored in overtime to give the Anaheim Ducks a 3-2 victory over the NHL-leading Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday.
The league's top scorer Steven Stamkos gave the Lightning a 2-1 lead just 21 seconds into the third period, but Kyle Palmieri tied the game with 4:20 left in regulation as the Ducks (5-7-1) prevailed in the OT session for their first win in three games.
Palmieri, 19, was playing in his first NHL game and came up with a huge play before Getzlaf notched his fifth goal of the year and team-leading 16th point.
"It was a big game for us," Getzlaf said. "It felt like we played pretty well tonight for the most part. We were able to come back at the end. The kid (Palmieri) scored a big goal in his first game and that is exciting."
Teemu Selanne's wrister put Anaheim ahead in the first period before Blair Jones scored with a slap shot to level the game.
Jonas Hiller made 32 saves for Anaheim as the Ducks managed to overcome the red-hot Stamkos, who leads the league in points with 10 goals and 10 assists this season.
With their first loss in three games, the Lightning (7-2-2) fell into a tie at the top of the Southeast Division with the Washington Capitals.
In other games, it was: Capitals 5, Maple Leafs 4, SO; Devils 5, Blackhawks 3; Stars 5, Penguins 2; Coyotes 4, Predators 3; Bruins 5, Sabres 2; Hurricanes 7, Islanders 2; Thrashers 4, Panthers 3; and Red Wings 2, Flames 1.
In Washington, Alexander Semin scored a late equalizer in regulation and then added the final goal in a shootout as the Washington Capitals beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-4.
In Chicago, rookie forward Bradley Mills scored his first NHL goal with 3:51 left in the third period to break a deadlock as New Jersey beat Chicago despite an injury to Martin Brodeur.
The star goalie left in the second period with a bruised right elbow.
In Dallas, Loui Eriksson scored twice, including a penalty-shot goal, and Kari Lehtonen made 21 saves as the stars earned a fight-filled victory over Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Crosby, who entered with only four penalty minutes this season and rarely fights, squared off against Matt Niskanen at 12:33 of the second period while Pittsburgh trailed 4-1.
In Buffalo, Tim Thomas made 33 saves in his seventh straight win, and Brad Marchand and Michael Ryder had a goal and assist each to lift the surging Boston Bruins to victory.
