Habs halt Caps' 14-game win streak

THE Washington Capitals had their 14-game win streak snapped on Wednesday, falling 5-6 in overtime to the Montreal Canadiens.

Montreal center Tomas Plekanec scored the game-winner with eight seconds left in overtime, a wrist shot off an assist from Sergei Kostitsyn.

"To beat this hockey club is great for us," Plekanec told reporters. "We needed two points in the standings and we got them."

Brooks Laich had forced the game into overtime by completing a hat-trick for the Capitals with just 18 seconds left in the third, where Washington scored three unanswered goals.

"Eventually you're playing with fire getting down by two or three goals," Laich said.

"During the streak we have been able to come back. We can't continually do it, it's not a recipe for success, and eventually when you play a good hockey team they're going to find a way to beat you."

The defeat for the Capitals meant they fell three games short of tying the Pittsburgh Penguins' NHL record of 17 consecutive victories set in 1993.

Scott Gomez opened the scoring after just 36 seconds for the Canadiens but Laich scored his first of the night just under six minutes later in the opening period.

Tom Pyatt scored his first NHL goal to restore the advantage at the start of the second but Nicklas Backstrom's wrist shot 30 seconds later levelled things up again for the Capitals. The Canadiens then broke clear with Glen Metropolit and Maxim Lapierre hitting a goal each just 12 seconds apart in the 13th minute of the second period, and Plekanec converted a wrister at 18:56 to make it 5-2.

But the Capitals fought back in the third, Mike Green scoring on a powerplay before Laich completed his hat-trick with a wrister and a tip-in to take the game into overtime.

The only sour note for the Canadiens was defenseman Josh Gorges being forced to leave the game after he was struck in the back of the head by a shot from Green late in the first period.

Gorges laid on the ice for several minutes before being helped off.

In Columbus, Ohio, the San Jose Sharks' run of nine successive road wins was stopped by the Blue Jackets, who scored thrice.

Goalie Steve Mason made 40 saves, raising his franchise record for shutouts to 14. He also led the NHL for shutouts by a rookie last season.

Rick Nash scored his 26th goal, Jake Voracek ended a long scoring drought, and Antoine Vermette added an empty-netter for the hosts.

In St Paul, Minnesota, the Phoenix Coyotes beat the Wild 3-2 to complete a four-game season sweep.

Martin Hanzal had a goal and an assist, and Radim Vrbata and Matthew Lombardi also scored for the Coyotes, who have won eight of their past nine games.

In Newark, New Jersey, the Philadelphia Flyers overcame a 0-2 deficit for the second straight game and beat the Devils 3-2.

Simon Gagne scored at 3:27 of overtime to complete the comeback, after Jeff Carter and Aaron Asham had scored.

In other NHL action, it was: Avalanche 4, Thrashers 3, OT; Penguins 3, Islanders 1; Predators 2, Rangers 1; and Ducks 3, Oilers 2.
