‘Hawks edge Hurricanes in SO

The Chicago Blackhawks claimed the 2,500th victory in club history by beating the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2 after a shootout on Tuesday, with Patrick Sharp scoring the shootout winner.

Among other games, Colorado held off Dallas and improved to 6-0, Ottawa’s Jason Spezza scored a hat trick to lead the Senators back to beat Phoenix, and San Jose downed St Louis in a clash of two previously unbeaten teams.

Chicago’s Sharp and Marian Hossa scored 2:22 apart in the first period for the defending Stanley Cup champions, only for Carolina to rally in the third period with goals from Alexander Semin and Ron Hainsey.

Sharp’s shootout goal combined with Corey Crawford’s three saves in the tiebreaker gave the Blackhawks their milestone victory. They became the last of the Original Six teams to reach the 2,500-win mark.

Colorado’s Matt Duchene scored twice as the Avalanche kept up its winning start with a 3-2 win over Dallas. Semyon Varlamov stopped 39 shots and Jan Hejda also scored for the Avs.

By winning six straight, Avalanche coach Patrick Roy tied the NHL record for victories to start a coaching career. He shares the mark with Mario Tremblay, who won his first six games with the Montreal Canadiens, a team Roy played for, in 1995-96.

Rich Peverley and Cody Eakin had goals for the Stars, who outshot the Avs 41-26.

Ottawa’s Cory Conacher scored 2:48 into overtime to complete the Senators 4-3 comeback win over Phoenix.

The Coyotes took a 2-0 lead on quick goals by Rob Klinkhammer and Radim Vrbata in the second period, but the Senators forced overtime via Jason Spezza’s fifth career hat trick.

San Jose’s Joe Thornton had a goal and three assists to help the Sharks down St Louis 6-2.

Patrick Marleau had a goal and two assists for the Sharks, who lost defenseman Dan Boyle when he was stretchered off after being checked from behind by the Blues’ Maxim Lapierre.

In other games, it was Maple Leafs 4, Wild 1; Sabres 4, Islanders 3 (SO); Penguins 3, Oilers 2; Canucks 3, Flyers 2; Canadiens 3, Jets 0; Lightning 5, Kings 1; Red Wings 2, Blue Jackets 1; and Predators 4, Panthers 3.
