Hossa nets OT winner as Chicago edges Detroit

CHICAGO'S Marian Hossa scored in overtime to give the Blackhawks a 3-2 win over his former team Detroit on Monday, boosting the Stanley Cup champions' hopes of making this season's playoffs.
Hossa, who helped the Red Wings reach the Stanley Cup Finals in 2008 before joining the Blackhawks for their title run last season, converted on a power-play 51 seconds into overtime to give Chicago an important win over his former team.
The victory kept the Blackhawks (41-26-8) one point out of seventh place in the Western Conference, just behind Anaheim which defeated the Colorado Avalanche 5-4 on Monday.
"We needed these two points. It was so important," Hossa told reporters, having helped lead an offense that is without injured leading goal-scorer Patrick Sharp.
"I know I wasn't good enough (this year) during tough stretches. Right now I feel like myself again and I have confidence."
Chicago's Jonathan Toews netted his 31st goal of the season in the first period and after Nicklas Lidstrom equalized, Brent Seabrook scored to put the Blackhawks 2-1 ahead.
Henrik Zetterberg tied the game early in the third period but also committed a hooking penalty against Patrick Kane in the final seconds of regulation that led to the game-winning power-play.
"It was a penalty. He made a good move there on me and I think they were 2-on-1, so I hooked him," Zetterberg said.
Detroit earned one point in the loss to take sole possession of second in the West.
The Red Wings got a strong performance from backup goaltender Joey MacDonald, who made 38 saves while starting in place of injured Detroit netminders Jimmy Howard (shoulder) and Chris Osgood (hernia).
Corey Crawford stopped 33 shots for Chicago.
