Hot Heatley snaps Coyotes win streak
DANY Heatley stayed hot to lead the San Jose Sharks to a 4-2 victory over Phoenix on Monday, snapping the Coyotes' four-game win streak.
Heatley, who scored twice in his team's win over St. Louis on Saturday, netted a go-ahead backhand in the second period to help San Jose defeat Phoenix (23-14-9) a sixth straight time.
Heatley added an assist on Logan Couture's goal that put the Sharks up 3-1 in the second, while goaltender Antti Niemi made 34 saves to give San Jose (23-19-5) consecutive wins following a six-game losing streak.
Patrick Marleau celebrated his 1,000th NHL game with the opening goal of the contest.
"It goes by quick, the 1,000 games," Marleau told reporters.
"You start thinking about all the people who helped you along the way, all the support. I look forward to many more games in the league."
Derek Morris tied it 1-1 in the first for the Coyotes and Phoenix rookie Oliver Ekman-Larsson recorded the first goal of his career in the third to pull the home side within one. But Joe Thornton scored an empty-netter with 49 seconds left to seal the contest.
Ilya Bryzgalov made 32 saves in a losing effort for the Coyotes, who lost defenseman David Schlemko to injury when he collided with San Jose's Scott Nichol in the third.
The Sharks' Ryan Clowe missed a second straight game (lower body) after having played in 129 straight contests, but San Jose continued their rule over Phoenix.
"It comes and goes, prior to (the recent streak) we kind of owned them," said Phoenix captain Shane Doan.
"There were a couple of goals you kind of want back, but they buried their chances and we didn't bury ours."
In Boston, Zdeno Chara had his first career three-goal game and Tim Thomas stopped 31 shots for his seventh shutout to lift the Boston Bruins to a 7-0 win over the Carolina Hurricanes.
Mark Stuart, returning to the lineup after missing 18 games with a broken finger, had a goal in the first period. Gregory Campbell, Patrice Bergeron and Michael Ryder also scored for Boston, which has lost just twice in regulation in its last 13 games.
In other NHL action, it was: Stars 2, Kings 1; Thrashers 3, Panthers 2; Canadiens 5, Flames 4; and Devils 5, Islanders 2.
