Islanders coming to China for camp
THE National Hockey League's New York Islanders will become the league's first team to visit China when it holds part of its training camp in Beijing, as well as Harbin and Qiqihar in Heilongjiang Province in September. The team's "friendship tour" is scheduled to end in Shanghai.
The New York Times reported earlier this week that Islanders' owner Charles Wang confirmed the trip will take place from September 14-23.
Most of the trip will take place in Beijing, where the Islanders will play intrasquad games. China's national team will also be involved. Half of the players from the Islanders will be mixed with half the players from China's national team to create two teams for exhibition matches, the report said.
Wang told the newspaper that the Islanders had received approval from the Chinese government, the NHL and the NHL Players' Association.
"It will be an experience for our team, and an experience for the Chinese hockey fans to see an NHL professional team," Wang told the newspaper.
"It'll be a wonderful event to have the China national team play alongside and with us."
The team has already worked with Chinese sports authorities to build the sport in Heilongjiang, an area where ice hockey is widely played or followed, the report said.
The Islanders have helped set up 28 outdoor rinks in the province and have donated equipment to school teams, Wang told the New York Times.
The Islanders already have an office with four employees in Harbin. The office is affiliated with Wang's Project Hope foundation, the report said.
The foundation and the Islanders have run exchange programs that have sent youth ice hockey teams between Long Island, New York, and Heilongjiang Province since 2006, the report added.
