Jagr scores 695th goal to pass Messier
Jaromir Jagr surpassed Mark Messier on the National Hockey League’s all-time goals list as the New Jersey Devils defeated the Montreal Canadiens 4-1 on Tuesday in Montreal, Canada.
Jagr, who was recently named to the Czech Republic team for next month’s Sochi Olympics, scored his 695th career goal to move into seventh spot on the list.
His historic marker tied the game as New Jersey scored four unanswered goals for its third win in four contests.
Jagr, 41, will be one of the oldest players in the men’s hockey tournament at the Winter Games.
“I’m not thinking about history or Messier’s goals,” he said. “I’m not retiring yet, I’m not counting games yet. I’m trying to have fun. I have good teammates around me. They make me look good.”
Jagr moved past Messier three days after passing former teammate Mario Lemieux for seventh place on the career points list.
Eric Gelinas, Adam Henrique and Dainius Zubrus also scored and Martin Brodeur made 29 saves for New Jersey.
Carey Price allowed three goals on just 18 shots and Max Pacioretty scored the lone goal for the Canadiens, who had won four of their last five against New Jersey.
Elsewhere, Colorado’s Tyson Barrie scored his second goal of the game on a power play 4:09 into overtime to lift the Avalanche past the Chicago Blackhawks 3-2.
With Jonathan Toews off for hooking, Barrie beat Corey Crawford with a one-timer after taking a cross-ice pass from Matt Duchene to give Colorado its second straight win.
In other games, it was: Predators 4, Flames 2; Sharks 2, Capitals 1 (SO); Maple Leafs 4, Bruins 3; Lightning 2, Rangers 1; Stars 5, Oilers 2; Panthers 4, Islanders 2; Blues 2, Coyotes 1; Senators 3, Wild 0; and Flyers 4, Sabres 3.
