Jagr sets a record with winning goal
Jaromir Jagr became the NHL’s all-time leader in game-winning goals after scoring on a second-period breakaway to give the New Jersey Devils a 2-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday.
The 684th goal of Jagr’s 20-year NHL career, gave him 119 game-winners, putting him one ahead of NHL Hall of Famer Phil Esposito.
“I remember him, I was watching him in 1972,” said the 41-year-old Jagr. “I wasn’t watching it live, I was just born in ‘72. I was watching the tapes and he was the man back then.”
Adam Henrique also scored and Martin Brodeur made 16 saves as the Devils won consecutive games for the first time this season and ended Tampa Bay’s three-game winning streak.
Elsewhere in the league, the Chicago Blackhawks rallied to beat the Ottawa Senators 6-5, the Montreal Canadiens topped the Dallas Stars 2-1 and the Phoenix Coyotes defeated the Los Angeles Kings 3-1.
In other games, St Louis’ Alexander Steen scored a power-play goal with 59.4 seconds left to break a tie and Jaroslav Halak made 21 saves to lead the Blues over the Winnipeg Jets 3-2.
Anaheim’s Kyle Palmieri scored two goals in the third period to rally the Ducks past the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2.
The New York Rangers rallied for a 3-2 win over the Islanders with third-period goals from Benoit Pouliot and Ryan McDonagh.
And Toronto’s Phil Kessel had two goals and two assists to lead the Maple Leafs past the Edmonton Oilers.
In Chicago, Jonathan Toews had three goals and an assist and Corey Crawford made 14 saves in relief of Nikolai Khabibulin for the Blackhawks, who trailed 4-2 in the second period.
Andrew Shaw also scored twice and Marian Hossa got his 100th goal with Chicago and No. 439 for his career.
