Jones shines in debut as Kings slip past Ducks in marathon shootout

Los Angeles goaltender Martin Jones made an NHL debut to remember, producing 26 saves and stopping all eight Anaheim attempts in the shootout to preserve a 3-2 win over the Ducks in Tuesday’s clash of Pacific Division rivals.
The Kings moved within a point of Anaheim, which slipped two points behind division leader San Jose, which beat Toronto to notch a sixth-straight win.
Also Tuesday, Dallas won at Chicago to end the Blackhawks own six-game streak, Vancouver downed sliding Nashville, and Pittsburgh’s Sidney Crosby played the starring role as the Penguins edged the New York Islanders in overtime.
Los Angeles’ Dwight King scored the shootout winner, finally finding a way past Anaheim goalie Jonas Hiller, who made a season-high 49 saves and stopped the Kings’ first seven shots in the shootout.
Jones stopped Mathieu Perreault to end the first clash of the season between the rivals.
Jeff Carter and captain Dustin Brown scored for the Kings, who have earned a point in 13 of their last 14 games while Corey Perry and captain Ryan Getzlaf scored for the Ducks, who remain the only team that has not lost in regulation at home this season.
San Jose’s Mike Brown had a goal against his former team to help the Sharks to a 4-2 win over Toronto.
Joe Thornton scored on a 5-on-3 power play while Brad Stuart and Logan Couture also scored for the Sharks, winners of nine of 10.
Phil Kessel netted his 200th career goal and Mason Raymond also scored in Toronto’s fifth straight loss.
Dallas’ Kari Lehtonen had a season-high 47 saves as the Stars beat Chicago 4-3.
Antoine Roussel converted a penalty shot in the third period, Valeri Nichushkin had a goal and an assist while Alex Chiasson and Erik Cole scored for Dallas.
Pittsburgh’s Sidney Crosby scored the tying goal in the third period and then won it with a brilliant individual effort in overtime as the Penguins beat the Islanders 3-2.
Crosby stole the puck from Thomas Vanek just outside the New York blue line, streaked down the middle between two defenseman and jammed a backhander past the goalie.
Kyle Okposo scored twice for New York, which has dropped seven straight and has given up late leads in consecutive games.
In other games, it was: Blue Jackets 1, Lightning 0, Hurricanes 4, Capitals 1; Coyotes 6, Oilers 2; Canucks 3, Predators 1; and Senators 4, Panthers 2.
