Kings advance with Blues win

THE Los Angeles Kings took another step in their bid for a Stanley Cup title repeat, beating the St Louis Blues 2-1 at home on Friday to reach the second round of the National Hockey League playoffs.

Kings goalie Jonathan Quick made 21 saves and Dustin Penner scored with just two-tenths of a second left in the second period to lift Los Angeles, which ousted St Louis 4-2 in the Western Conference first-round set.

Quick won the Conn Smythe trophy last year as the Most Valuable Player of the playoffs for guiding the Kings' improbable run to their first Stanley Cup crown.

In six games against the Blues, Quick allowed 10 goals on 177 shots.

Drew Doughty also scored for the Kings.

Chris Porter scored the only goal for St Louis, which won the first two games of the series before losing four straight. Blues goalie Brian Elliott gave up both Kings goals as Los Angeles became the first reigning Stanley Cup champion in three years to reach the second round.

Elsewhere, the Detroit Red Wings beat the Anaheim Ducks 4-3 to force a Game 7, while the Toronto Maple Leafs won at the Boston Bruins 2-1 to cut the series deficit to 2-3 and the Washington Capitals downed the New York Rangers 2-1 to go 3-2 ahead.
