Kings reach playoffs after overtime cliffhanger

THE Los Angeles Kings slipped into the post-season with a nail-biting 3-2 shootout win over the Phoenix Coyotes in a playoff decider on Wednesday.

Los Angeles goalie Jonathan Quick improved his shootout record to a perfect 10-0 this season turning aside two of three shooters.

Jarret Stoll followed a successful attempt by Michal Handzus with his ninth shootout goal in 10 attempts this season for the game winner.

The victory moved the Kings ahead of Phoenix and Nashville into fourth in the Western Conference with an opportunity to secure home ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

"Our goal is obviously to make the playoffs," said Stoll. "The home ice is there for us and these last two games are a big test for us, getting our game to where we want it to be for playoffs."

Stoll opened the scoring in the first period to stake the Kings to a 1-0 lead, but the Coyotes roared back with goals by Lee Stempniak and Taylor Pyatt before the end of the period. Kyle Clifford scored the equalizer late in the second period.

Elsewhere, Corey Perry capped his third career hat-trick with his NHL-leading 50th goal as the Anaheim Ducks kept pace in a tight playoff race with a 6-2 victory over the San Jose Sharks.

Also, it was: Blackhawks 4, Blues 3, OT; Oilers 6, Flames 1; Hurricanes 3, Red Wings 0; Capitals 5, Panthers 2; Bruins 3, Islanders 2; and Devils 4, Maple Leafs 2.
