Kings tip Flames from Northwest top

THE Los Angeles Kings held off the NHL's top road team Calgary with a 2-1 victory on Monday, tipping the Flames from top spot in the Northwest Division.
The Kings' Jarret Stoll snapped a 1-1 tie at 4:34 in the second period and the home team (18-10-3) held firm for their fifth win in seven games despite managing only 16 shots on goal.
Curtis Glencross scored for the Flames (18-8-3) at 15:39 in the first, using a backhand to beat goaltender Jonathan Quick, who finished with 26 saves.
Scott Parse, however, had put the Kings in front seven minutes earlier and Stoll's game-winner condemned Calgary to only their third road game loss in regulation this year. Quick came up big with down the stretch with some saving stops to overshadow Calgary's hot goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff, who had 15 saves.
"It was a great team win," Quick told reporters. "Everyone battled all game long. It was a great two points against a real strong Calgary team. We've just got to keep this momentum going."
Despite the win, Los Angeles struggled on offense with Anze Kopitar, who not long ago led the NHL in goals and points, extending his scoring drought to a career-high 13 games.
Still, Stoll took a pass from Justin Williams for the game-winner on a power-play opportunity and Quick held the Flames off the scoreboard for the final 35 minutes.
"Thankfully it was the (game-winner), but it was a battle out there," Stoll said. "It was kind of a fire drill in our zone for a little while.
"Quickie was great, he made some big saves for us when we needed him to. They're a great team and they're hard to play against, so it was a big win for our club."
In Buffalo, New York, Martin Brodeur tied Terry Sawchuk's NHL record with his 103rd shutout to lead the New Jersey Devils to a 3-0 victory over the Buffalo Sabres. Brodeur was rarely tested in making 22 saves to tie Sawchuk, who played from 1949-70. It was Brodeur's second shutout of the season after he blanked Carolina on October 17.
Brodeur earned his league-leading 18th victory of the season. He preserved the shutout with a lightning-quick glove stop on Buffalo defenseman Steve Montador's wrist shot from the slot 5 minutes into the third period.
Brian Rolston, Travis Zajac and Niclas Bergfors scored for New Jersey.
In Tampa, Florida, Alex Ovechkin scored two goals in his return from a two-game suspension as Washington beat the Lightning 3-0 for the 12th consecutive time.
Ovechkin was suspended by the NHL following a kneeing penalty during a November 30 game with Carolina.
Both of his goals came during the Capitals' three-goal second.
Eric Fehr also scored for Capitals. Tampa Bay has lost five of six.
In other action, it was: Maple Leafs 5, Thrashers 2; Canadiens 3, Flyers 1; Avalanche 4, Blues 0; Hurricanes 3, Penguins 2; Oilers 3, Panthers 2, SO; and Coyotes 2, Wild 0.
