Leafs move clear with Lightning rout

THE Toronto Maple Leafs made up for more than a year of frustrating results against Tampa Bay with a stunning 7-1 rout of the Lightning on Tuesday to storm to the top of the Northeast Division.

Tyler Bozak led the scoring with two goals as the Maple Leafs claimed a first win against Tampa Bay since March 2010 after being swept by the Lightning in last season's series between the teams.

The triumph also moved the Maple Leafs (12-8-2) two points clear of Boston and Buffalo in the division.

Clarke MacArthur, returning from a three-game absence with an upper-body injury, got Toronto off to a flying start with a pinpoint wrist shot just 41 seconds into the game.

"Scoring the first goal on the first shift got us in the right frame of mind," Leafs coach Ron Wilson told reporters.

"We wanted to push the pace. I thought we were really effective at doing that."

Tim Connolly and Bozak added powerplay scores to leave the Lightning reeling at the end of a frantic first period, while Joe Colborne extended the lead to 4-1 in the second.

Bozak, Joffrey Lupul and Joey Crabb added goals in the third to make it a stress-free night for goaltender Jonas Gustavsson, who finished with 27 saves.

Connolly also added two assists, Bozak chipped in one of his own, as did NHL points leader Phil Kessel.

Vincent Lecavalier scored the lone reply for the Lightning (9-9-2), a first period equalizer that kept the home team on level terms until the Maple Leafs struck again.

Tampa Bay has now lost two straight games and remains mired in the middle of the pack in the Southeast Division.

"We're just not as consistent as we want to be," Lecavalier said. "To be a playoff team, you've got to be consistent and that's something we have to get better at."

In Nashville, Tennessee, Edmonton's Jordan Eberle had two goals and an assist and Shawn Horcoff scored twice as the Oilers beat the Predators 6-2. Ales Hemsky and Jeff Petry also scored for Edmonton, which closed within three points of Northwest Division leader Minnesota. Jordin Tootoo and Jonathon Blum scored for the Predators, who missed a chance to close on leader Chicago.

In St. Louis, Willie Mitchell's first goal of the season gave Los Angeles a 3-2 victory at St. Louis. Mike Richards had a goal and an assist and Anze Kopitar notched his team-leading 10th goal of the season for the Kings.
