Lightning nail Caps to snap run of losses
THE Tampa Bay Lightning ended a 12-game losing streak against the Washington Capitals with a thumping 7-4 victory on Tuesday.
With the scores tied at 4-4 in the second period, Martin St Louis scored with a slap shot at 17:28 to put the Lightning ahead, with Kurtis Foster and Jeff Halpern adding goals in the final period to make the game safe.
"It was a good effort for us... you don't want to give up those goals but it was lot of character for us coming back," the Lightning's Steven Stamkos told reporters.
"We'll take the win especially against those guys. They are a potent offensive team and we did a good job of refocusing."
Earlier, Tampa had raced into a first period 4-1 lead after an opening effort from Vincent Lecavalier, two goals from Steven Stamkos and a Stephane Veilleux wrist shot before the Capitals found a way to claw back into the contest.
Tampa's victory was its first over Washington since November 2007.
Washington was attempting to match the Philadelphia Flyers, who have beaten the New York Islanders 13 successive times, for the longest active win streak in a single matchup.
Instead, the Capitals' performance was marred by a sequence in the third when Alex Ovechkin made a questionable hit on Lightning winger Steve Downie.
The two players dropped their gloves and were prepared to fight when Matt Bradley instead skated in to battle Downie.
"The hit was knee-on-knee; I don't think it was the cheapest hit in the world but one with the intent to hurt one of our players," Tampa Bay center Jeff Halpern said.
"We have a long way to go. This is the step in the right direction but we're not content by a long stretch."
Both teams had their goaltenders pulled with the Capitals' 21-year-old Michal Neuvirth replaced after allowing four goals on 15 shots following the first period.
Tampa Bay netminder Antero Niittymaki made 22 saves through 33 minutes before exiting.
In New York, Patrik Elias scored the only goal of a shootout and Martin Brodeur earned his fourth shutout in the last 10 games as the New Jersey Devils beat the Rangers 1-0.
Elias connected in the fourth round, snapping a shot past Henrik Lundqvist's glove.
With the shutout, Brodeur extended his NHL record to 107, making 51 saves through overtime and four more in the shootout.
Elsewhere, it was: Sharks 3, Coyotes 1; Thrashers 6, Senators 1; Islanders 6, Red Wings 0; Flyers 6, Stars 3; Hurricanes 4, Maple Leafs 2; Blues 4, Blue Jackets 1; and Predators 5, Oilers 3.
