Neal suspended 5 games
Pittsburgh Penguins forward James Neal was slapped with a five-game ban on Monday for a knee to the head of Boston Bruins forward Brad Marchand, the National Hockey League announced.
The incident took place in the first period of Saturday’s NHL game when Neal skated into Marchand, who was down on the ice.
The referees gave Neal a two-minute minor penalty before the league’s disciplinary officials reviewed it on tape and decided to increase the penalty.
The penalty on Saturday precipitated a fracas in which Bruins forward Shawn Thornton punched Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik twice in the head. Orpik left the ice on a stretcher but was not seriously injured.
Neal has 10 goals and 10 assists this season.
