O’Reilly powers Avs past the Panthers

Colorado’s Ryan O’Reilly had a goal and an assist as the Avalanche won 3-2 at Florida on Friday, moving within seven points of the NHL Central Division lead.
Among the day’s other games, Detroit finally strung together successive home wins by downing Montreal, and Jaromir Jagr climbed the list of career assists as he helped New Jersey defeat Washington.
Colorado’s Jamie McGinn and Paul Stastny also scored for the Avalanche.
Scottie Upshall scored both goals for Florida.
Detroit’s Henrik Zetterberg, Nicklas Kronwall and Gustav Nyquist each had a goal and an assist in the Red Wings’ 4-1 win over Montreal. Riley Sheahan also scored for Detroit.
Brendan Gallagher scored the sole goal for Montreal.
“Obviously, real important. It’s like anything, some years you win lots of games at home and some years you don’t,” Detroit coach Mike Babcock said. “Some years you’re good on the road and some years you’re not and you never really figure out why. But we have an opportunity here on Sunday to keep things going and we’d like to.”
New Jersey beat Washington 2-1, with Jaromir Jagr setting up two goals to move level with former teammate Mario Lemiuex for 10th on the NHL’s career assists list with 1,033.
Jagr’s response to the achievement was expected.
“I don’t pay attention,” the 41-year-old said.
He is seven behind Marcel Dionne for ninth place.
Jagr was not thrilled with how the Devils played, their final game before today’s outdoor match at Yankee Stadium against the Rangers.
“We didn’t play well,” Jagr said. “We’re lucky we got two points. They are struggling and we didn’t score when we had the chance. We didn’t play very well and it almost cost us a game.”
Elsewhere, it was: Flames 5, Predators 4 (SO); and Coyotes 4, Oilers 3.
