Oilers storm back to clip Canadiens
THE Edmonton Oilers overcame a two-goal deficit in the third period to beat the Northeast Division-leading Montreal Canadiens 4-3 in overtime on Wednesday.
Dustin Penner scored the game-winner less than three minutes into overtime after Ales Hemsky and Sam Gagner notched goals in the third period to dig the Oilers out of a 3-1 hole and force overtime.
In the extra session, Penner capitalized on a turnover and beat goaltender Carey Price on a breakaway.
"The bottom line is that we really gutted it out here, when we could have just gone south and said that's good enough," Edmonton coach Tom Renney told reporters. "These guys clearly understand that's not good enough anymore. That's the beauty of a team growing up before your eyes."
Devan Dubnyk made 36 saves for the Oilers (8-12-4), who won consecutive games for the first time since the opening two contests of the season.
Dubnyk was perfect after the home team claimed a two-goal advantage in the middle of the second period.
Scott Gomez's wrist-shot gave the Canadiens (15-8-2) a 1-0 first-period lead before Edmonton's Kurtis Foster tallied on the power-play to tie the score. Mathieu Darche scored his fourth goal of the season and Roman Hamrlik notched his second two minutes apart to give the Canadiens their two-goal lead.
Hamrlik and Darche also had assists while Hemsky had two for the Oilers in his first game back after a groin injury kept him on the sidelines for three games.
"That's a good team, they have talent," said Montreal coach Jacques Martin said. "If you don't respect them, or any team, and try to open the throttle you're playing with fire, and you'll get burned."
In Philadelphia, Tim Thomas stopped Scott Hartnell on a second-period penalty shot and finished with 41 saves for his NHL-leading fifth shutout of the season as the Boston Bruins beat the Flyers 3-0.
Elsewhere, Canucks 7, Flames 2; Predators 4, Blue Jackets 3, SO; Capitals 4, Blues 1; Coyotes 4, Wild 2; and Ducks 5, Panthers 3.
