Penguins see off Chicago onslaught
THE Pittsburgh Penguins survived a nail-biting third period onslaught to hold off the NHL-leading Chicago Blackhawks 3-2 on Tuesday.
Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury made 36 saves and kept the visitors at bay during a power-play in a frantic closing 90 seconds.
"This was exciting. They came back in the third and kept coming at us. It was a bit stressful," Fleury told reporters. "We're hungry. We were disappointed (losing in the first round of the playoffs) last season. We're looking forward to getting back and doing better than we did."
Pittsburgh (19-11-4) was playing without Sidney Crosby for a sixth consecutive game while Kris Letang was also absent, but it once again rode the hot hand of Evgeni Malkin, who set up all three goals.
Malkin has six goals and nine assists in his last six games to carry the load for an understrength Pittsburgh side.
The Penguins took a 1-0 lead on Chris Kunitz's first-period wrist shot and padded the advantage to 3-0 with scores from James Neal and Tyler Kennedy in the second.
The tide turned early in the third when Jonathan Toews netted a backhand 49 seconds into the period.
Viktor Stalberg then turned the heat on the Pens with his goal at 6:12 in the final period as Chicago (21-9-4) peppered the Pittsburgh net.
However, the Blackhawks, who outshot the Penguins 19-4 in the period, could not find an equalizer and saw their five-game win streak come to an end.
Chicago winger Patrick Sharp also saw his league-high nine-game point streak come to an end as his team was defeated in the high-profile clash. "We've had pretty heated games with (Chicago)," Pittsburgh's Matt Cooke said. "We use them as a measuring stick and they might do the same for us. It makes for good games."
