Predators squeeze past Caps
NASHVILLE and Anaheim remained locked together for the NHL lead as both teams posted victories on Friday, with the Predators edging Washington 4-3 while the Ducks cruised to a 5-1 win against New Jersey.
The Predators, who have two games in hand on Anaheim, got the better of former coach Barry Trotz, who returned with his Washington team.
Elsewhere, the New York Islanders took over the lead of the Eastern Conference with a 6-3 thrashing of Pittsburgh, and Winnipeg closed within two points of Central Division rival Chicago by beating the Blackhawks 4-2.
Nashville’s James Neal scored twice as the surging Predators claimed their fifth straight victory.
New York’s Kyle Okposo scored three of his four goals in the third period to record his first NHL hat trick, helping the Islanders beat Pittsburgh 6-3 and move above Tampa Bay in the East.
Ryan Strome and Michael Grabner also scored for the Islanders, who are now three points ahead of Pittsburgh.
Anaheim’s Hampus Lindholm and Jacob Silfverberg scored 1:52 apart to break open a tied game, and Corey Perry got his team-high 19th goal to lead the Ducks past New Jersey 5-1.
The New York Rangers won 2-1 at Columbus while Vancouver goaltender Ryan Miller stopped 27 shots in his second straight shutout as the Canucks defeated Carolina 3-0.
