Rangers Brawler Had Brain Ailment
RANGERS enforcer Derek Boogaard of Canada suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a degenerative brain ailment that is caused by repeated blows to the head.
The 28-year-old Boogaard, who died in May of an accidental overdose of alcohol and oxycodone, was found to have had CTE, which can be diagnosed only after the death of the patient, according to an extensive three-part series on Boogaard reported by The New York Times.
The disease has been found in the brains of four former NHL players examined by the Boston University researchers.
