Rangers ease past Islanders
CARL Hagelin scored twice to help lift the New York Rangers to the top of the Eastern Conference with a 3-0 win over city rivals the Islanders.
The Rangers returned from a two-day break on Monday to win their fifth game in a row and move a point ahead of the Boston Bruins, although it's a lofty position that New York is refusing to get carried away with.
"Doesn't mean anything to me," Rangers coach John Tortorella told reporters. "How many games have we played? I don't care about Boston or anybody else. We haven't even gone halfway through the year."
Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist made 28 saves for the shutout, while his Islanders counterpart Evgeni Nabokov also stopped 28 shots in a losing effort.
The Islanders have had trouble finding the net and are currently last in the East with an 11-17-6 record.
In St. Louis, Adam Cracknell justified his recall from the minors earlier in the day by scoring the go-ahead goal as the Blues beat the Dallas Stars 5-3.
St. Louis, which won its sixth successive home game, scored two rare power-play goals and improved to 7-1-1 in its past nine.
Chris Stewart scored twice for St. Louis, including an empty-net goal with 50 seconds left.
Evgeny Grachev, Chris Stewart and Jason Arnott also scored for the Blues, who had lost their previous five against Dallas.
In Nashville, Valtteri Filppula scored a pair of goals to lead Detroit 4-1 over Nashville.
Also, it was: Avalanche 4, Wild 2; Canucks 5, Oilers 3; Kings 4, Coyotes 3; Sabres 4, Capitals 2; Blackhawks 4, Blue Jackets 1; Hurricanes 4, Devils 2; and Ducks 3, Sharks 2.
