Rangers send Capitals hurtling to 6th defeat
THE New York Rangers pummeled Washington 7-0 on Sunday to send the struggling Capitals to their sixth successive loss.
Ryan Callahan scored two goals and the Rangers scored four times in the second period during an onslaught featuring a fight between two-time MVP Alex Ovechkin and New York's Brandon Dubinsky.
The two players squared off near center ice, with the Rangers leading 4-0, after Ovechkin delivered a hard check on New York defenseman Daniel Girardi.
It was just the second official career fight for Ovechkin, who left the game for good with 9:10 left in the third after taking a shot from teammate Alexander Semin off his right knee.
"I really respect the way he plays and how hard he is and obviously the skill level he has, but at the same time I turn around and see one of my teammates on the ice so I'm going to try and protect him," Dubinsky told reporters of the fight with Ovechkin.
"He is a competitor, and it was a good battle."
Goaltender Henrik Lundqvist made 31 saves for his fifth shutout of the season as the Rangers (18-13-1) handed the Southeast Division-leading Capitals (18-11-3) their worst loss of the season.
New York blitzed Washington goaltender Semyon Varlamov, who allowed all seven goals on 20 shots.
Having lost to the Capitals in their last meeting on November 9, the Rangers went ahead 1-0 on a goal from Brandon Prust with 2:03 left in the first period.
Artem Anisimov, Marian Gaborik and Dubinsky scored during a 3 minute span in the second where Marc Staal also converted a backhand. Callahan scored twice in the third.
Washington has lost six in a row for the first time since 2007.
