Rangers turn to Quinn
David Quinn, a former Colorado Avalanche assistant who guided US college powerhouse Boston University for the past five seasons, was hired on Wednesday as coach of the National Hockey League’s New York Rangers. The 51-year-old American replaces Alain Vigneault, who was fired last month after the Rangers missed the Stanley Cup playoffs for the first time in eight seasons. “I’m incredibly excited for this new challenge,” Quinn said. “But leaving a job like this is very hard to do.” Quinn coached his alma mater to the 2015 US college final, which the Terriers lost to Providence College, and to the quarterfinals in three of the past four campaigns. Quinn becomes the second college coach to jump to the NHL since the season ended, University of Denver bench boss Jim Montgomery taking over the Dallas Stars this month. The Rangers, whose only Stanley Cup since 1940 came in 1994, went 34-39 with nine OT losses this season.
