Red Wings motor past rival St Louis

DANNY Cleary scored two goals and led an offensive outpouring in the third period to lift the Detroit Red Wings to a 7-3 victory over their Central Division rivals the St Louis Blues on Wednesday in Michigan.

Right wing Cleary delivered the go-ahead score with 7:34 remaining, the first of four unanswered goals in just over three minutes for Detroit, which blew the game open after it had been tied at 3-3.

Henrik Zetterberg, Brad Stuart and Tomas Holmstrom tacked on the final three goals.

"I feel pretty confident for sure. It's pretty hard not to be," Cleary said after scoring a goal in his sixth straight game. "I've got a good line. We're creating a lot of opportunities and trying to work hard."

It was the fourth straight win for the Red Wings (12-3-1) as they stretched their division lead to three points over the Chicago Blackhawks and four points over the Blues (9-5-3), who have now lost five in a row.

Brad Boyes, Brad Winchester and Andy McDonald scored for St Louis, but goaltender Jaroslav Halak allowed a career-worst seven goals as the Blues fell apart down the stretch.

"It was going to the third period tied 3-3, and I don't know what happened," Halak said. "We just couldn't stay with them and they scored on pretty much every chance they had."

In other games, it was: Capitals 4, Sabres 2; Penguins 3, Canucks 1; Blue Jackets 5, Kings 3; Bruins 3, Rangers 2; Wild 2, Ducks 1, OT; Avalanche 4, Sharks 3, OT; Hurricanes 7, Senators 1; Coyotes 3, Flames 1; Panthers 2, Thrashers 1; Blackhawks 5, Oilers 0; and Lightning 4, Islanders 2.

Nicklas Backstrom and David Steckel also scored as the Capitals took a 3-0 lead early in the second period.

Washington has a league-high 29 points.

In Pittsburgh, the hosts beat Vancouver in regulation for the first time in 10 years.

The Canucks were 7-0-1 against the Penguins since 2000, and had won their past four in Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby scored on a breakaway and Max Talbot scored short-handed.

In Edmonton, a Jonathan Toews' hat trick helped Chicago trounce Edmonton.

Patrick Sharp and Bryan Bickell also scored for the Blackhawks.

The Oilers have lost five games in a row.
