Red Wings snap Canucks' streak
THE Detroit Red Wings edged the Vancouver Canucks 5-4 in overtime on Wednesday to pick up their first win in three games on the way to regaining top spot in the Western Conference.
Henrik Zetterberg scored the winner with his second goal of the game, an angled snapshot that beat Vancouver goaltender Roberto Luongo on the short side.
The victory lifted the Red Wings one point clear of the Dallas Stars at the top of the Western Conference and ended a four-game winning streak for the Canucks.
"You look at the standings, everything's gotten pretty condensed here, so every point matters right now," Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard said. "We battled hard, we never gave up. We wanted to win this game. It was a great win."
Zetterberg sparked the Red Wings, who overcame one-goal deficits twice in the third period. He leveled the score at 3-3 with a backhand shot before setting up Nicklas Lidstrom's tying goal with 3:54 remaining to force overtime.
Power-play goals by twins Henrik and Daniel Sedin, both set up by Ryan Kesler, drew the Canucks level in the second period and former Red Wing Mikael Samuelsson's goal in the final minute of the period gave Vancouver their first lead.
Following Zetterberg's first goal early in the third period Jeff Tambellini again gave the Canucks a lead with 7:50 remaining.
Dan Cleary opened the scoring for Detroit in the first period and Valtteri Filppula scored in the second period.
Red Wings star center Pavel Datsyuk fell awkwardly late in the first period and suffered a broken right hand. The injury does not require surgery but Datsyuk will wear a cast and miss four weeks.
Also, Sidney Crosby matched the second-longest NHL scoring streak in 18 years with his first-period goal and the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Florida Panthers 5-2. In other NHL action, it was: Blackhawks 4, Predators 1; and Islanders 2, Lightning 1, OT.
