Senators manhandle Sharks
THE Ottawa Senators broke through for their first win in San Jose in eight years by beating the Sharks 4-1 on Thursday in a clash of two of the NHL's leading teams.
Colin Greening scored twice and Craig Anderson made 36 saves for Ottawa, which has won six of its past seven games to be just one point off Northeast Division leader Boston.
Kyle Turris and Erik Karlsson also scored for the Senators.
Brad Winchester scored for the Sharks, whose lead in the Pacific Division was sliced to one point ahead of LA.
In New York, Pittsburgh won a fourth successive game by beating the New York Rangers 4-1, closing the gap between the two NHL Atlantic Division heavyweights.
Richard Park scored the go-ahead goal 2:23 into the third period, Evgeni Malkin padded the lead with two, and Marc-Andre Fleury made 30 saves in Pittsburgh's victory over New York.
Malkin has 24 goals this season, including seven in four games.
Chris Kunitz also scored for Pittsburgh, which moved within eight points of the Rangers. Carl Hagelin scored for New York.
In Glendale, Arizona, Todd Bertuzzi scored in regulation, then spun in front of the net and made a spectacular backhand shot in the shootout to give Detroit its fifth victory in a row, edging Phoenix 3-2.
Three of the wins in Detroit's streak have come in shootouts, two of them over Phoenix by identical scores.
In other games, it was: Flames 2, Kings 1 in a shootout; Bruins 4, Devils 1; Maple Leafs 4, Wild 1; Islanders 4, Flyers 1; Blues 1, Oilers 0; Jets 4, Sabres 1; and Predators 3, Blue Jackets 0.
In Los Angeles, Calgary ended a run of six straight road losses by beating Los Angeles in a shootout. Jarome Iginla scored the tying goal in the second period, Olli Jokinen and Michael Cammalleri connected on Calgary's first two shots in the shootout, and goalie Miikka Kiprusoff stopped two of the three shots he faced.
