Senators rattle Sabres to earn 10th straight victory
THE red-hot Ottawa Senators picked up their 10th successive win on Wednesday after two goals apiece from Jason Spezza and Daniel Alfredsson earned them a 4-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabres.
Spezza provided the game's first two goals, netting at 13:38 in the second period and again almost six minutes into the third, before Buffalo hit back with two goals in 27 seconds from Andrej Sekera and Tim Connolly to tie the score at 2-2.
Swede Alfredsson scored on a wrister with a minute left to put the Sens ahead 3-2, then put the puck into an empty net 37 seconds later to seal the victory.
Ottawa's win trimmed Buffalo's lead in the Northeast to three points.
Elsewhere in the National Hockey League, it was: Blues 3, Blackhawks 2; Ducks 3, Red Wings 1; Flames 4, Hurricanes 1; and Oilers 1, Flyers 0.
In Buffalo, New York, goaltenders Brian Elliott (Senators) and Ryan Miller (Sabres) each finished with 34 saves.
"They came at us and we kind of lost our focus for about 30 seconds," Elliott told reporters. "We bent, but we didn't break. It's good to see we can still win games."
Ottawa (32-21-4) has relied heavily on defense during its streak, holding each of its last 10 opponents to two goals or less.
On the offensive end, both Spezza and Alfredsson are firing on all cylinders.
Spezza scored for the fifth consecutive game since returning from a knee injury that sidelined him for more than a month. Alfredsson missed time over the last month due to a shoulder ailment but has 13 points in his last nine games. However, Senators winger Nick Foligno will miss the next six to eight weeks with a broken leg.
The Sabres (32-16-7) have not played well of late, losing six of their last eight. They have also lost eight in a row to division rival Ottawa.
Meanwhile, the Columbus Blue Jackets fired defensive-minded coach Ken Hitchcock on Wednesday, less than a year after the club made the playoffs for the first time.
Assistant coach Claude Noel was chosen to lead the team on an interim basis.
General Manager Scott Howson announced the firing a day after the struggling Blue Jackets blew a 1-0 lead in a listless 1-5 loss at Colorado. Columbus stands 14th of the 15 teams in the West with a 22-9-27 record.
