Senators snap 5-game losing streak

THE Ottawa Senators snapped a five-game losing streak with a 2-0 win over the Montreal Canadians on Monday.
Peter Regin and Erik Karlsson scored goals for Ottawa while Brian Elliott made 29 saves to shut out the Canadiens.
It was Ottawa's second win in 10 games since the NHL season resumed after the Vancouver Olympics.
The Senators (38-30-5) moved into fifth in the Eastern Conference on 81 points while Montreal (36-30-7) remained tied for sixth with Philadelphia on 79 points.
Canadiens goaltender Jaroslav Halak was beaten on a tip-in by Regin at 10:15 in the first period and on a wrist shot by Karlsson at 8:17 in the third, but made 25 other saves.
"It feels great. Obviously the two points, but even more I think the way we played," Ottawa captain Daniel Alfredsson, who had assists on both goals, told reporters.
"The way Elliott played was huge for us. I mean that gave us a lot of confidence, and I thought we played really well in front of him as well and really put a lot of pressure on them."
The shutout was Elliott's fourth of the season.
Canadiens left wing Travis Moen was injured in the second period after he was cut on the face by a skate.
"It's scary when the skate comes up like that," said Montreal defenseman Hal Gill. "You just hope it's not the eye. You hope he's doing all right."
In Detroit, Henrik Zetterberg scored two goals and had an assist to help lift the Red Wings to a 3-1 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Valtteri Filppula scored in the final minute of the first period and Jimmy Howard finished with 26 saves for the surging Red Wings.
Pascal Dupuis pulled Pittsburgh within a goal late in the second period and Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 30 shots.
A lot more was at stake the last time the past two NHL champions met in Joe Louis Arena. The Penguins hoisted the Stanley Cup on June 12, 2009 after Game 7 to deny Detroit's quest to repeat.
This time the Red Wings padded their lead for the final spot in the Western Conference playoffs with their fifth win in six games.
In Los Angeles, Drew Doughty scored on a fierce slap shot with 1:20 left in overtime as the Kings recovered from TJ Galiardi's dramatic equalizing goal for a 4-3 victory over the Colorado Avalanche. Ryan Smyth scored his second goal with 10:05 left in regulation for the Kings, but Galiardi tied it on a desperate rebound goal with 6.6 seconds to play.
